5 Ways You Can Negotiate Like a Pro

The art of bargaining and negotiating for something you really, really want does not begin and end with that cute sweater you saw at a thrift shop. You can use your negotiation skills in a professional way, to ensure you are getting what your effort and talent is worth.

There are a few things you need to keep in mind while bringing up this negotiation:

  1. Keep in mind how you received the job offer- Was it handed to you by the company? Did they approach you? Or did you apply for it online or via other sources? Chances are, if the company has approached you upfront with an offer, you will find it easier to negotiate a higher pay or benefits with them.

  2. How bad do you want it?- Is this your dream job? Or something you have worked towards for years? If you are more attached to the company and the job title than the actual nature of the job, negotiating becomes tougher for you because you would be willing to do anything it takes to land a job in that firm, at times even settling for slightly less than what you deserve. A suggestion from us is, apply for any job keeping its nature in mind. Do not get carried away by company titles and workplace ambience. Always dig a little deeper.

  3. Surprises are NOT good- Know what to expect. Do not let yourself be surprised by anything your employers say. You can learn about researching your employers here . Do prior research and make sure you know your market value, so the number you put forth is not unreasonable.

  4. Confidence is key- When you put a number forward, do it with confidence. Looking at your stance and firmness, your employers will also believe you deserve that amount.   5. Prepare your talking points- Negotiating involves pitching yourself and your talents to a certain degree, so have talking points ready. Validate your reason for that salary amount or raise amount or even benefits. Ask questions. (Read our post about asking smart questions .) Sometimes, instead of giving you a monetary raise, your employers might offer you other benefits and perks. Be flexible, and do your research so you know what to accept and what to politely decline.
