This method of answering questions helps you stand out from other interviewees, and displays positive aspects of your personality while giving conclusive answers to your interviewer’s questions. STAR stands for
You begin by describing the situation you were in. Then explain the task at hand. After specifying your task or goal, talk about the action you took to achieve it and end your answer with the result or outcome of your actions. This is a simple explanation of how exactly to use the method. But the more important question is: when to use it?
You can use the STAR technique to answer questions like;
“Describe an occasion when….”
“Share your experience with….”
“How would you handle an XYZ situation?”
If the interviewer presents you with a certain situation or incident that you have experienced in the past, you can use this method to mention your own personal experience and relate it to the question posed to you. STAR is about how you have handled certain work situations. The employers may be looking for proof of various skills like analytical ability, problem solving skills, critical thinking and in some cases even basic soft skills like teamwork, empathy and compassion.
All in all, the interviewer just wants to get to know you better, and make sure you are a good fit in their workspace. Using this method assists them in the process, while also proving you are an interesting interviewee, and someone they will definitely consider for the position.
