Why you SHOULD Use our Storytelling Technique in an Interview

Updated: Sep 16, 2020

There’s nothing more powerful than a good story. - Tyrion Lannister

George R.R. Martin had it right when he wrote this dialogue in his bestselling series. Here, you will gain a brief introduction about the art of becoming a good storyteller, and why you should employ this method in your interviews.

This is one of your secret keys to win every interview and stand out. This method helps you to avoid giving generic answers to questions posed by your interviewer. Storytelling is not a very long-drawn process. In fact, the key is keeping your story as precise yet detailed as possible.

The hiring manager will ask you a question, for example, ‘why do you want to work for us?' and instead of answering this question very generically, like, “because your company is international and offers a many growths opportunities” you dive into the question. Firstly, you set the agenda: “That’s a great question. There are two main points of why I want to join your company. Firstly, it’s an international, well-respected organisation offering a lot of growths opportunities. Secondly, I’ve used your product in the past and loved the experience, just based on that fact alone I can see myself selling it to your customers on a daily basis. Let me elaborate on those two points in more detail.”

Now that you have explained the agenda of your answer, direct your interviewer to the specific point or points that directly support your agenda. Dive into details, and use examples. This helps you explain how the company would benefit from your experience, while also answering the question.

A technique that can help you keep your answer as precise as possible is the STAR interview technique. Using this method of answering interview questions allows you to provide concrete examples or proof that you possess the experience and skills for the job at hand.

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. Using this strategy is particularly helpful in response to competency-focused questions, which typically start out with phrases such as, "Describe a time when..." and "Share an example of a situation where...."
